How to Get Back into Your Body

You may have heard the term “grounding” or “get back into your body.” You may also have no idea what that means, how to do it, or why it’s important. Let’s take 5 minutes right now, to do it, and learn why it’s beneficial to your wellbeing.

Most of us spend a lot of time in our heads – thinking about all the things – past and future, work, and family stuff.

This disconnects us from our self (physically, spiritually, and emotionally) and keeps us disconnected from our intuition and our emotional guidance system. The simple practice of coming back to your body will ground you and help you become more aware of where you are and what you need. I’ve had many clients forget to eat because they are not intune with their body’s hunger signals. This is one way that disconnection from our body shows up.

So how do we do it?

Take in your senses

  • What do you hear at the moment?
  • What is your sense of touch?
  • Do you have aromas in the room? What do you smell?
  • Are you outside? What do you smell?
  • What do you see?

When we practice connecting to our 5 senses we become the receiver for our body and come back to the present moment.

Notice body sensations; Do a body scan.

  • What are you feeling in your body?
  • Are you clenching your jaw?
  • Do you feel constricted in your neck or upper back?
  • Is your chest heavy or tight?
  • Do you have butterflies in your belly?
  • Are you hungry?
  • If you take deep breaths, do you feel your chest release and feel lighter?
  • Can you feel your shoulders relax?
  • Can you keep your jaw loose?
  • Do your hips feel tight?
  • Do you have any sensations in your legs or feet?

Give yourself a loving thought.

Coming back to the body is a practice. We can’t stay here all day but you can visit from time to time throughout your day. This will support you to become more grounded and connect to your body and learn to give yourself what you need.

Then I earned my certificate in Health Coaching and focused on diet. In the midst of all this, I was having a quarter life crisis and what I call spiritual awakening and this brought me to integrate my emotional and spiritual self with the physical and mental.
