How To Access & Listen to Your Emotional Guidance System

How often in your life do you do something because you want to? When was the last time you replied when asked why you are doing something with “Because I want to?”

As adults, much of our life is run by what we have to do and what we are responsible for doing. From a young age, we are conditioned to disconnect from our emotional guidance system by authority figures. We are nurtured to put our trust in authority figures outside of ourselves. Over time we become so disconnected from ourselves, we blindly go down a path ignoring our intuition and feelings. So when questioned why we do something, we feel we need to explain and justify our choices. When in reality, we do not need to give explanations as to why we do what we do. We are our own authority.

Our emotional guidance system is just what it sounds like; accessing our inner emotions to guide us to what we truly want – honoring ourselves in the deepest way possible.

Take a day or a week to access your emotional guidance system, listen to it and do what you are being called to do. Then when questioned, respond with a simple “Because I want to.” Then see how good that feels.

Schedule some time to be with yourself. Give yourself 2 hours to do the exercise below and see what unfolds for you.

  1. Sit with yourself, close your eyes and become aware of your thoughts.
  2. Begin to let them move through you. Don’t linger on any one thought. Allow them to pass through your mind and let the next thought enter.
  3. After a minute or so of allowing your thoughts to be there, focus on clearing your mind. Picture white light or pitch black, whatever works for you.
  4. Take a few deep cleansing breaths and feel your body relax as you stay focused on your clear mind.

Move your focus to body awareness, feel your breath through your body. When you have a thought that enters your mind, just let it pass through and refocus on your white light from before.

Spend a few minutes here. Five, 10, 15. Try not to get frustrated when a thought enters your mind. That’s normal. Just repeat the above steps. Continue to take your deep breaths and feel the air move through your body, allowing thoughts to come to you and pass through you.

When you are done, you may have a sense of clarity and lightness to you. You will have a deeper awareness of your thoughts, allowing the next intuitive hit to enter and inspire. The next moment you get an intuitive hit to do something, do it because you want to. Go after it. See what happens and watch how you feel.
To start honoring your true self more, make it a priority to move from this space more often.

Then I earned my certificate in Health Coaching and focused on diet. In the midst of all this, I was having a quarter life crisis and what I call spiritual awakening and this brought me to integrate my emotional and spiritual self with the physical and mental.
